About the role

Please note onsite interviews will be taking place onsite on Wednesday 21 October

We are looking for a practical, self-motivated Mechanical Field Service Engineer to provide front-line support across Kraken’s customer network.

Working primarily as a mobile support engineer, you will travel to customer and operational sites, diagnosing faults, carrying out repairs and maintaining the mechanical systems that support our platforms. You will have access to a fully equipped service van containing the tooling, equipment, consumables and commonly required parts needed to resolve issues effectively.

You will also support remote fault diagnosis through our business support portal, reviewing technical information, prioritising requests and providing clear, practical guidance. This is a varied, hands-on position for an organised engineer who can work independently, use initiative and represent Kraken professionally in every customer interaction.

What you'll be doing

  • Providing front-line mechanical field support at customer sites, facilities and operational locations
  • Diagnosing, maintaining and repairing mechanical systems, diesel engines, propulsion and drive systems, and associated vessel equipment
  • Completing planned and reactive maintenance, component replacements, engine changes and mechanical rectification work
  • Responding rapidly to customer issues using the allocated mobile workshop van
  • Maintaining tooling, equipment, consumables and commonly required spares in a serviceable and organised condition
  • Triaging faults, establishing likely causes and determining whether issues can be resolved on site, require additional parts or need escalation
  • Providing clear, professional and customer-focused communication throughout diagnosis, repair and return-to-service activity
  • Supporting remote fault diagnosis through the business support portal
  • Reviewing available evidence and providing practical mechanical guidance when immediate site attendance is not required
  • Prioritising workloads, tracking open cases and recording diagnostic findings and completed actions
  • Identifying the tooling, consumables and parts required for each task
  • Raising parts requests through the approved business system
  • Managing allocated stock and parts responsibly to maintain an effective mobile service capability
  • Completing service reports, inspection records, defect reports and customer handover documentation accurately and promptly
  • Escalating recurring, complex or safety-critical issues to the Mission Support Manager and relevant engineering specialists
  • Working safely in accordance with Kraken procedures, customer requirements, risk assessments and safe systems of work
  • Capturing lessons learned to help improve product reliability, technical documentation, spares planning and customer support processes

What we're looking for

  • A strong mechanical engineering background gained within field service, marine engineering, automotive, heavy equipment, defence, industrial maintenance or a comparable environment
  • Practical experience maintaining, diagnosing and repairing diesel engines and mechanical drive or propulsion systems
  • Experience completing major component replacements, including engine removal and installation or equivalent complex mechanical work
  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills
  • The ability to identify root causes and implement safe, practical repairs
  • The ability to work independently, organise field activity and use initiative while following approved procedures and escalation routes
  • A professional, presentable and customer-focused approach
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills
  • A proactive, flexible and can-do attitude
  • A willingness to travel and respond to changing support priorities
  • Good organisational and digital skills, including experience using support portals, business systems and Microsoft Office applications
  • The ability to maintain accurate service, diagnostic, parts and customer records
  • A full UK driving licence
  • A willingness to travel regularly to customer-defined locations, including overnight stays where required
  • The ability to fulfil the driving requirements of the position
  • Willingness and ability to travel extensively throughout the UK and overseas
  • Eligibility to obtain and maintain any security clearances required by the business and its customers

Desirable experience

  • Experience working on marine diesel engines, propulsion systems, gearboxes, shaft lines, steering systems or auxiliary machinery
  • Experience supporting vessels, Uncrewed Surface Vessels, autonomous platforms or remotely operated maritime systems
  • A recognised mechanical, marine engineering or vehicle maintenance qualification, apprenticeship or equivalent practical experience
  • Manufacturer training or certification relating to diesel engines, propulsion or mechanical systems
  • Previous experience in a customer-facing field service, mobile maintenance or breakdown support position
  • Experience managing van stock, tooling, spares and service consumables
  • Experience within defence, maritime technology, offshore, workboat or another safety-critical operational environment
  • Knowledge of electronic service management, parts ordering or enterprise resource planning systems
  • Vessel towing experience

How you'll work

You will take ownership of your workload, communicate clearly and work collaboratively with colleagues, customers and specialist engineering teams. You will approach challenges practically, maintain high standards of accuracy and professionalism, and follow through on your commitments.

Above all, you will represent Kraken professionally while delivering responsive, safe and effective support to our customers.

Why join us?

This is an opportunity to take on a varied, hands-on engineering role where no two days will be the same. You will work directly with customers, solve real operational challenges and provide valuable feedback that helps improve our platforms, technical documentation and support processes.

What we provide

  • After two years’ consecutive service, one additional day’s annual leave up to a maximum of five additional days annual leave

  • Life assurance 3x salary
  • Group Income Protection
  • Health Care Cash Plan
  • Cycle to Work Scheme
