Apply nowAbout the role
This role sits at Mid level and is responsible for independently delivering defined design scopes across concept, detailed design, and production phases. The role involves the creation of 3D models, engineering drawings, and associated technical documentation, ensuring compliance with applicable standards, integration requirements, and production constraints.
Working within a multidisciplinary engineering environment, the role supports the development of integrated mechanical, structural, and systems solutions, contributing directly to product performance, buildability, and programme delivery. The role requires strong engineering judgement, practical problem-solving ability, and the capacity to balance technical requirements with cost, schedule, and manufacturing considerations.
The Design Engineer is expected to work independently within defined scope, while collaborating closely with senior engineers and discipline leads to ensure alignment with overall design intent and project objectives.
What you'll be doing
- Production of 3D CAD models, assemblies, and engineering drawings in line with company standards
- Development of robust, manufacturable design solutions within defined scope
- Execution of design tasks from concept through to detailed design and production support
- Preparation and maintenance of design documentation and technical outputs
- Collaboration with other Engineering disciplines to ensure integrated design solutions
- Support to production, including resolving design queries and incorporating feedback
- Participation in design reviews and change control processes
- Management of assigned tasks to meet programme schedules and delivery milestones
- Supporting continuous improvement of design processes, tools, and capability
What we're looking for
- Degree qualified in Mechanical, Marine, Aerospace, Product Design Engineering, or similar (BEng, MEng, or equivalent)
- Experience delivering design work from concept through to detailed design and production support
- Highly competent in 2D and 3D CAD modelling
- Understanding of engineering drawings, tolerancing, and configuration control
- Knowledge of materials, manufacturing processes, and design for manufacture principles
- Ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a practical engineering mindset
- Effective communication skills and ability to manage tasks within project timelines
Desirable experience
- Experience working within Siemens NX CAD and Teamcenter PLM environments
- Exposure to marine engineering environments and small-to-medium batch production platforms
- Experience with mechanical systems integration (e.g. hydraulics, propulsion, or ship systems)
- Awareness of structural design principles and/or naval architecture interfaces
- Exposure to production or manufacturing environments, including resolving build issues
- Working towards Incorporated Engineer (IEng) or Chartered Engineer (CEng) status with a recognised institution (e.g. IMechE, RINA, IMarEST)
